Galba's big trouble came from the military, although he was not popular with the civilian population due to his taxation and his all round nastiness. He got off on the wrong foot with a group of soldiers who a fought and protected Rome when he dismissed them without pay. He had a mutiny in Germany and refused to pay the praetorian guard the bonus they had earned. When he lost the support of the troops, he lost the throne and his life.
