In 1763, George III, the new King of Great Britain, had just emerged victorious in the hard-fought Seven Years War. The expensive war had drained the royal treasury, and George III wanted very much to avoid another such war. He issued the Proclamation of 1763, banning all American colonists from settling west of the Appalachian Mountains. He believed that such westward settlement would instigate more wars with the French fur traders and Native American tribes that still dominated that region. The Proclamation of 1763 was the first of many actions attempting to tighten Britain's grip on the American colonies.
