Before the battle of Hastings, Harold Godwineson had had to go to the battle of Stamford Bridge, where he had fought Harald Hardraada and won. The battle of Stamford Bridge up in the north, so because there was no means of transport they had to march on foot, up to the north. Then, when William appeared in the south, they had had to march back down again. Also lots of his men were killed and most of his men were farmers, so they had gone home to harvest. If Harold had waited, more men would have come and he might have won.

Harald lost the battle due to Williams tactics of moving his troops out of their battle positions. Williams idea very soonly decreased his army.
