That he farted
1953
I just have a while guess but I would say...ummm...YES!
General Douglas MacArthur, who said some things that President Harry S. Truman told him not to say.
It is difficult to say for sure, the government does not acknowledge it's existance. But at least as far back as the Truman administration.
"backcountry family " is rather hard to define precisely. I would say that Andrew Jackson, Milllard Fillmore, James Buchanan, Abraham Lincoln , Andrew Johnson and Harry Truman might be said to come from backcountry families. Martin VanBuren, James Garfield , Herbert Hoover , Dwight Eisenhower, Richard Nixon , Gerald Ford and Bil Clinton also have some claim to a backcountry familiy, I think. Maybe even Jimmy Carter.
It was during the Truman administration that we say the rise of the McCarthyist paranoia in America, and the beginning of the Cold War, which was to prove so costly to America.
According to www.Trumanlibrary.org, ". . . the "S" did not stand for any name but was a compromise between the names of his grandfathers, Anderson Shipp Truman and Solomon Young. He was later heard to say that the use of the period dated after 1962 as well as before."
