The Iliad and the Odyssey.
Homeric Greek is the form of Ancient Greek that was used by Homer in the Iliad and Odyssey. It is an archaic version of Ionic Greek, with admixtures from certain other dialects, such as Aeolic Greek.
The Odyssey, is the sequel to the Iliad following Odysseus's adventures home. The Odyssey is the sequel to The Iliad. The Odyssey is the story of Odysseyus' journey home from Troy to Ithica. The sequel shares some of the same characters like Odysseyus for example. He is also the one who came up with the idea of the Trojan Horse that ultimately one the war against Troy for the Greeks.
For the Ancient Greeks the Iliad and the Odyssey told them how Greece had come to be the dominant power in the western Mediterranean, and also showed them what sort of people their gods were, and how those gods behaved. The Iliad and the Odyssey (and possibly some other epics, which have now been lost) were what the Greeks had instead of history books, and also what they had instead of a Bible.
In Homeric poetry, the Greeks are referred to as Argives (as in, "people of Argos") or Danoi (as in, "sons of Danaus"). Danaus was the mythological ancestor of Perseus, legendary founder of the civilization of Mykenai. Argos was the capital of Mykenai. So, basically, throughout the Iliad and Odyssey, the Greeks in general are referred to as Mykenaians, though the Spartans, Ithakans, etc. were also present.
