I tend to believe that Jacob has testing his son Joseph as yo whether he brought up his two sons Ephraim and Menashe properly. When Menashe the firstborn did not protest his grandfather's laying of his left hand upon his head Jacob was relieved that there was no sibling rivalry between his grandsons.
Joseph's way of educating his children was an improvement on the way the patriarchs had raised their children: There was animosity between Abraham's two sons, as well Issac's two sons could not live in peace one with another, Jacob's ten sons hated the young favorite, Joseph enough to wish to kill him, but luckily only sold him into slavery.
Therefor Jacob was satisfied with Joseph's way of raising his two sons where no jealousy at all prevailed between them
