'This cup.' - The words appear in Matthew 26:39 -

"And he went a little farther, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou [wilt]."

This cup was the cup of the wrath of God for the punishment of the sins of the whole world which Jesus drank for our sakes - "For he hath made him [to be] sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him." (2 Corinthians 5:21). He then went willingly to the cross.

Why is gethsemane important to christians?

The Garden of Gethsemane, on the Mount of Olives near Jerusalem, was the place where Jesus and the Disciples went following the Last Supper on Maundy Thursday. Matthew 26:36 and Mark 14:32 tell of Jesus asking the Disciples to watch and pray while he went aside to pray alone. What was the name of the garden that Jesus prayed in and the disciples fell asleep?

The Garden of Gethsemane was a place located on the Mount of Olives that Jesus often resorted to for prayer and communion with His Father. Just before Judas' betrayal and nearing the time of His crucifixion, Jesus travelled to Gethsemane with His disciples so that He could pray. While Jesus was praying, His disciples fell asleep. The entire account can be found in Matthew 26:36-45, Mark 14:32-41, and Luke 22:39-46. Matthew 26:36 "Then cometh Jesus with them unto a place called Gethsemane, and saith unto the disciples, Sit ye here, while I go and pray yonder." Matthew 26:40 "And he cometh unto the disciples, and findeth them asleep, and saith unto Peter, What, could ye not watch with me one hour?"

Who did Jesus take with him to the garden and where can it be found in the bible?

After the Lord's supper was instituted in the upper room Jesus took the remaining 11 disciples to Gethsemane and then He took Peter, James, and John with Him a short distance from the others and there he had them wait while He Himself went another short distance to pray. Who betrayed Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane?

Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon. 'Jesus answered them, Have not I chosen you twelve, and one of you is a devil? He spoke of Judas Iscariot of Simon: for it was he that was to betray him, being one of the twelve.' Ref: John 6:70/71. - 'And they came to a place that was named Gethsemane....' Ref: Mark 14:32. 'And while He was yet speaking, behold a multitude; and he that was called Judas, one of the twelve apostles came before them, and drew near to Jesus to kiss Him: and Jesus said to him, Judas, betrayest thou the son of man with a kiss?' Ref: Luke 22:47/48. Judas Iscariot betrayed Jesus with a kiss, in so doing indicating to the servants of the Chief priests, scribes and elders, that the kissed person is confirmed by him to be Jesus Christ, of whom they seized.

Why was Jesus in such agony in the garden of gethsemane?

There is no record of Jesus crying in Gethsemane. Though the Bible says he cried many times while praying - Hebrews 5.7Perhaps your question related to him sweating blood, in:Luke 22.44. And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly: and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground. This happened while he was praying, and because, as he said to Peter James and John who he took with him:And saith unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful unto death: (Mark 14.34.)And this was because he did not want to go to the cross, and asked his Heavenly Father if it could be avoided; thus:And he said, Abba, Father, all things [are] possible unto thee; take away this cup from me: nevertheless not what I will, but what thou wilt. (Mark 14.36)
