Did you know that this was before Jesus Christ was sacrificed on the cross? This means that when he said this, he was talking about His body. He was crucified for all of our sins in order for us not to go to hell. All we have to do is accept Him into our hearts and when we die we will go to heaven.

It is a metaphor for spiritual 'eating'. The verses in John 6 v58 and 63 clarify this.

This is that bread which came down from heaven: not as your fathers did eat manna, and are dead: he that eats of this bread shall live for ever...It is the spirit that quickens; the flesh profits nothing: the words that I speak to you, they are spirit, and they are life.

Why is Holy Communion central to your identity as Catholic Christians?

The Eucharist (Holy Communion) is the actual Body and Blood of Our Blessed Lord, Jesus Christ physically present among us. Without the Eucharist, there would be no Church. The Church is the Mystical Body of Christ which depends for its existence on the Real Body of Christ in the Eucharist. When we receive Holy Communion worthily we are receiving Our Blessed Lord and becoming Him. This was His Command: "So Jesus said to them, 'Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink His blood, you have no life in you; he who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day. For my flesh is food indeed, and my blood is drink indeed. He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood abides in Me, and I in him.'" (St. John 6:53-56)

What does it mean when Catholics say 'unless you eat my body and drink my blood you have no life within you'?

Catholics believe that Jesus Christ instituted the sacrament of the Eucharist at the Last Supper. To "eat [His] body and drink [His] blood" is to receive the Catholic Eucharist. This gift of grace is life-giving..AnswerWhen a Catholic says "unless you eat My Body and drink My Blood you have no life in you" he is quoting from St. John's Gospel, chapter 6, verse 53: "So Jesus said to them, 'Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the son of man and drink his blood, you have no life in you; (54) he who east my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life and I will raise him up at the last day. In the original Greek the first time Our Blessed Lord refers to eating His Flesh and drinking His Blood, he uses common, ordinary eating terms. When the Jews object, Our Blessed Lord raises the ante and uses words for gnaw and chew, and the word He uses for flesh indicates flesh-meat. In other words, by repeating this verse, the Catholic is pointing out the impossibility of thinking that Our Blessed Lord is speaking only spiritually. The Jews tried that approach and Our Blessed Lord rebuked them in the most down to earth way that refers to the feeding of animals such as mules, pigs, and cattle.

What are the affects of the Holy Eucharist?

John 6-51:57 "I am the bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world. The Jews quarreled among themselves saying, 'how can this man give us [his] flesh to eat?' Jesus said to them, 'Amen, amen, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you do not have life within you. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him on the last day. For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in him. Just as the living Father sent me and I have life because of the Father, so also the one who feeds on me will have life because of me.'"

Why does Christ want us to receive His body and blood at communion?

He doesn't. This is something that has been invented by religion.Jesus told His disciples (and all believers) to eat bread and drink wine to remember Him:Luke 22:19 And He took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, "This is My body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of Me."Luke 22:20 Likewise He also took the cup after supper, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in My blood, which is shed for you.Jesus didn't say receive His body or blood. Also no where does the Bible teach that the bread and wine become Jesus' body and blood when a person takes communion. In John Chapter 6 Jesus says:John 6:53 Then Jesus said to them, "Most assuredly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in you.If you look at the context of the whole chapter you will see that Jesus is not talking literaly but figuratively comparing salvation that God offers through Jesus' death with the manna God provided for the nation of Israel in the wilderness.By comparing verse 54 with verse 47, we can see that to eat His flesh and to drink His blood means to believe on Him. In verse 47 we read that "He who believes in Me has everlasting life." In verse 54, we learn that whoever eats His flesh and drinks His blood has eternal life. To eat His flesh and to drink His blood is to believe on Him.

Where did the practice of drinking blood and eating raw flesh come from?

Why is the Eucharist a special sacrament of the church?

It is a special sacrament because you are receiving Jesus Himself! Jesus stated, "Unless you eat my flesh and drink my blood, you have no life within you." People started quarrelling and disputing about what he said. Jesus seeing that the people were confused about what he said did not clarify what he said but he went on and reassure that it is to be taken literally. Exactly one year later, he had the Last Supper.
