The displaced persons who were not real sick were given regular food like meat, vegetables, eggs, etc. But a good proportion them were sick and in a starvation state. The medical personnel and Red Cross workers had to help them recover. They fed them broth, "gruel" and whatever else would stay in their stomachs. Eventually they were able to eat soft foods and tolerate vitamins and minerals and proteins again. Sadly, many had lost their teeth due to starvation effects.

DPs were known as displaced persons at the end of the war. They were Jews and any other person who had no home or country to return to and needed a place to live. They were put in displaced persons camps until they could be relocated.

The displaced persons in the internment camps went either to their original countries, to live with relatives elsewhere, and many went to other countries like the United States. Some Jews went to Israel.
