it isnt easy its boring
Joseph Priestly discovered "oxygen" in 1744. He called it "dephlogisticated air."
Oxygen.
idk i think it waz named by gorgi longe Actually there were three people who were credited for it and they didn't invent it either, they just discovered the theory and proved it. Carl Scheele from Sweden Antoine Lavoisier from France, and John Priestly from England. Carl Scheele was the first to experiment with it, Priestly was the first to publish it (as "Dephlogisticated air") but Lavoisier was the first one to actually understand it (And name it Oxygen)
In 1772, Priestley made another important discovery. He had placed a shoot of a green plant into a container of water. He then covered the container and lit a candle in it until it completely burned out. Later, Priestley was able to both burn the candle again and keep mice alive in the air (did they have lab mice back then?). Priestley became the first person ever to observe the photosynthesis in plants - the fact that they take in carbon dioxide and release oxygen.
He put a piece of mint leaf in a covered container and lit a candle inside it. The candle burnt longer than it did when there was no plant in the container. He also tested this experiment with a rat.

dephlogisticated air is oxygen gas; - so called by Dr. Priestly and others of his time.
In 1774 Joseph Priestley discovered oxygen. He conducted several experiments and one of them showed that plants release oxygen into the air.
Joseph Priestly
Joseph Priestley was the man who first discovered oxygen, or as he called it "dephlogisticated air", back in the 18th Century
It derives from the French 'principe oxygene' which means 'acidifying principle'. The name was given because at the time it was thought that oxygen had to be present in an acid. The word was suggested by Antoine Lavoisier, the 'father of chemistry', though it was first isolated by Joseph Priestley. Priestly had called it 'dephlogisticated air' so I for one am very grateful to Lavoisier.
use your brain
No one knows
Who discovered that air was more than just empty space Joseph Priestly spelled Joseph Priestley to whoever was the idiot who gave the incorrectly spelled first answer
