Matthew 27:5 says that Judas threw down the silver in the Temple and went and hanged himself. The priests took the blood money and bought the potter's field, which they called the field of blood, because it was blood money. In this story, the fact that he returned the money and committed suicide means that Judas felt sorry for what he had done. Matthew 27:3-5: 'Then Judas, His betrayer, seeing that He had been condemned, was remorseful and brought back the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders, saying, "I have sinned by betraying innocent blood." And they said, "What is that to us? You see to it!" Then he threw down the pieces of silver in the temple and departed, and went and hanged himself.'

Acts 1:18 says that Judas bought a field with the reward of iniquity, and fell headlong, bursting asunder and all his bowels gushed out. Because of this, the field was called the field of blood. In this story, the fact that he kept the money and bought land means that he must have felt very happy with what he had done, even though he subsequently had a fatal fall, depriving him of the rewards of his infamy.

Another AnswerIt would appear from the King James translation that Judas repented:-

Matthew 27:3 [KING JAMES]

Matt 27 (v.3) Then Judas, which had betrayed him, when he saw that he was condemned, repented himself, and brought again the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders,

However, Judas did not actually repent:-

Commentator David Guzik says on Matthew 26:74-75:-

<http://wiki.answers.com/%200;%20margin:%200;%20margin-bottom:%2010px;%20background-image:%20url(http://en.site1.answcdn.com/templates/icons/qr.gif);%20background-position:%20bottom%20right;%20background-repeat:%20no-repeat;%20height:%2022px">d. We see a significant contrast between Judas (showing apostasy) and Peter (showing backsliding).

i. Apostasy is giving up the truth, as Judas did. Judas was sorry about his sin, but it was not a sorrow leading to repentance.

ii. Backsliding is a decline from a spiritual experience once enjoyed. Peter slipped, but he will not fall; his bitter weeping will lead to repentance and [his later] restoration.

Other translations make it clear that Judas did notactually repent :-

Other versions render "Repent" here in Matthew 27:3 in the KJ as instead:

-"changed his mind" (ESV)

-"regretted what had happened" (GW)

-"regretted what he had done"(NET)

-"felt remorse"(NASB)

-"was remorseful"(NKJV)

Basically, Judas felt sorry/regretful/remorseful etc but not repentant.

AnswerI do not think that the word sorry is strong enough for how Judas felt. Remorse, anguish or betrayal might be better suited. Few people commit suicide because they felt sorry. Being overcome with grief at having betrayed Christ who he knew to be the son of God was more than he could bare. He had to forfeit his own life to atone for his sin.

A:

It is in Matthew's Gospel that Judas repented. Matthew 27:3-5 says that Judas repented of what he had done and took the thirty pieces of silver back to the Temple and cast them down at the priests. He then went away and hanged himself. Dennis R. MacDonald (Two Shipwrecked Gospels) points out that his repentance was made necessary by a traditional saying that was included in Matthew 19:28, in which Jesus clearly promises all twelve apostles who were with him, including Judas, thrones to judge the twelve tribes of Israel. That would be incongruous unless Judas repented and was forgiven.

Another account in Acts of the Apostles shows Judas to be unrepentant. No doubt pleased to be suddenly rich, he purchased a field with the money he had received (Acts 1:19). Unfortunately for him, he fell down and died, his bowels gushing out in the field he bought.

A third account comes from Papias (c. 110 CE), via fragments cited by later Christian sources as we no longer have Papias' original books. This account appears to have been based on an oral tradition known to Papias, which was a rebuttal of Matthew's account. Whether or not Judas repented, the fragment we have begins by agreeing that Judas hanged himself, but says that he was cut down before he died. As with the two accounts in Matthewand Acts, it was necessary for Judas to have the most repugnant end possible. So Judas grew enormously fat and maggots poured out of every orifice in his body, with disgusting descriptions. After many tortures and punishments, he died in his own plot, which became deserted and uninhabited even to this day due to its stench.

The Bible tells us that Judas repented. That is... for the money he was given, he was expecting Jesus maybe to be rebuked or reprimanded by the high priest for what Judas thought was minor infractions against a few Jewish "customs" and "traditions." But: "...when he saw that Jesus had been condemned to die, changed his mind and deeply regretted what he had done..." (Matt.27:3 LVB Living Bible) (same verse KJV): "...when he saw that He was condemned, REPENTED HIMSELF...". However... by that time... each and every one of Jesus' disciples had "REPENTED" of having hung out with Him. But, according to the Bible... there is a way that proves [bears out] one's repentance: "First go and prove BY THE WAY YOU LIVE that you have really repented..." (Luke 3:8 LVB). Three days later... the "condemned" appeared to His disciples again -- and a whole new way of Living began for them, whereby they "proved" their repentance. But Judas was dead. He died not having a "direction" to go with his repentance -- in Faith to the blood of his Savior, Jesus Christ [as the disciples would learn, later]. In his self-centered, miserly way, Judas liked Jesus. Though disapproving of many of the things Jesus said and did that seemed to fly in the face of many traditions to which the people had become accustomed; and stewing in resentment over some of them -- Judas was still the group treasurer; and in this role he was contented. In this regard... Judas was no different from the other disciples; worldly, concerned with the cares of the world. But the difference between Judas' repentance and the disciples' is that the disciples LIVED to place their Faith in the blood of the One who was the source of their initial regret. The disciples learned to "overcome" the world through Christ's forgiveness, three days later and in the years ahead. But Judas didn't live long enough to see any Hope for the future. He didn't live to see that about 50 days later on Pentecost... the very first people to whom God offered His forgiveness, was to THOSE WHO KILLED CHRIST. Peter, now given the Holy Spirit of God, who overcame his original dread, fear and regrets of that night... told Jesus' murderers: "Therefore I clearly state to everyone in Israel that God has made this Jesus YOU CRUCIFIED to be THE LORD, THE MESSIAH! "These words of Peter's moved them deeply [the people 'repented themselves'], and they said to him and to the other apostles, 'Brothers, WHAT SHOULD WE DO?' "And Peter replied, 'Each one of you must turn from sin [KJV; REPENT], return to God, and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; then you shall receive this Gift, the Holy Spirit." (Acts 2:36-38 LVB) The Bible tells us that Judas "repented himself." He was sorry for the direction his human indiscretion [and Satan's opportunity - Luke 22:3] took things. But, Judas didn't live to "prove" his repentance. His Hope and Time ran out too soon for him to overcome it.

This depends on which biblical source we prefer to use:

Matthew's Gospel tells us at 27:3-5 that Judas repented of what he had done and took the thirty pieces of silver back to the Temple and cast them down at the priests, then went away and committed suicide.

In Acts of the Apostles, at verse 1:19, Judas was no doubt pleased to be suddenly rich, and purchased a field with the money he had received. He did not repent, but unfortunately for him, he fell down and died, his bowels gushing out.

Was Judas saved?

A:In Matthew's Gospel, it is possible to say yes, Judas was saved, but in Acts of the Apostles the answer is no, so it depends on which source we rely on.Matthew 27:3-5 says that Judas repented of what he had done and took the thirty pieces of silver back to the Temple and cast them down at the priests. Did anyone ever recover Judas' 30 pieces of silver?

There is no historical record indicating that Judas' 30 pieces of silver were ever recovered. After Judas returned the silver to the chief priests and elders, they decided to use the money to buy a potter's field.

Why Jesus had to be betrayed by Judas especially when he was so popular?

That was all part of God's plan. Jesus came as the lamb of God = a sacrifice for sin. John 1:29 The next day John saw Jesus coming to him, and said, "There is the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! It was God's plan for Jesus to die and God's plan for Judas to betray Him. We don't know for sure but it seems that Judas may have repented of his sin, in that case God would forgive him. Mat 27:3 When Judas, the traitor, learned that Jesus had been condemned, he repented and took back the thirty silver coins to the chief priests and the elders. Mat 27:4 "I have sinned by betraying an innocent man to death!" he said. "What do we care about that?" they answered. "That is your business!" Mat 27:5 Judas threw the coins down in the Temple and left; then he went off and hanged himself.

What did Judas spend his 30 pieces of silver on?

In Matthew's Gospel, Judas did not spend the money, but threw it back at the priests. Matthew 27:3-5 says that Judas repented of what he had done and took the thirty pieces of silver back to the Temple and cast them down at the priests. He then went away and committed suicide. But in Acts of the Apostles, Judas was no doubt pleased to be suddenly rich, and purchased a field with the money he had received. Unfortunately for him, he fell down and died, his bowels gushing out.
