Henry VIII established the Catholic persecution of England when the Pope refused to grant him a divorce. He ruthlessly suppressed the Church, confiscated all their property, turned the nuns and monks out on the street, forced all his subjects to give up the religion they had been raised with, and executed all those who stood up to him for their faith. In the process he established the protestant church in England, which his daughter, Elizabeth I would formally establish as the Church of England.
