Laura's mother, Caroline Lake Quiner Ingalls, taught two terms of school, each one probably lasting two months. After she married Charles Philip Ingalls in 1860, she did not work again for many years. In 1876-77, the Ingalls family lived in Burr Oak, Iowa. This period is not mentioned in the Little House books, but during this time Ma and Pa operated the Masters Hotel. In the winter of 1880-81, the Ingalls family were the first to arrive in the area that would become DeSmet, Dakota Territory (later South Dakota). They wintered in the Surveyors' House, which was overrun in the spring with men traveling west to file homestead claims. It was Ma's idea to charge the men for their meals and a space on the floor to bed down for the night. It was hard work, but together Ma and Laura earned over $40 in a few weeks' time. For over 20 years the Ingalls family lived a primitive lifestyle by choice, with very few creature comforts. Ma worked as hard in the house as Pa did outside to keep the family going.
