Well,,their purpose WAS'NT to open up trade with the native's. ( although that did happen later.) They were sent to find an all-water route across the great divide,,by tom jefferson,president of USA,,,There is no practical water route across our country,,but that did not stop them from trying,,Sacagawea was a translater for them,,when they needed it.
