HAPPY. IT MADE THE SLAVE MASTERS MAD.
Lincoln also preserved the unity of the United States by defeating the secessionist Confederacy.
He was the 16th President of the United States. He led the country through one of the worst periods in US history; the Civil War. He wrote the Emancipation Proclamation to help the Union win the Civil War and thus preserve the Union. The Emancipation Proclamation freed slaves in the states which had rebelled against the Union, thus, at the time it was written, the Union did not have control over the states, which had seceded or rebelled against the Union. The Union states were "free states" as the Northern states (divided between Maryland and Pennsylvania, and the Western Territory had outlawed slavery. The rebel states or Confederate states did surrender to the Union, and became "free states" by virtue of the Emancipation Proclamation.
Thus, Lincoln was successful in bringing the United States together, again, as one nation.
Six days after the end of the Civil War, Lincoln was assassinated at Ford's theatre, in Washington DC, while watching the play "Our American Cousin". His assassin, John Wilkes Booth, was a Confederate sympathizer who denounced Lincoln and his Administration, angered and outraged at the defeat of the South, and the abolition of slavery. After President Lincoln was shot, point blank, in the back of the head by Wilkes Booth, Lincoln died approximately 9 hours later, the morning of April 15, 1865.
One of the biggest things he did was the Emancipation Proclamation. When he wrote it, many states had left the Union and the Civil War was well underway. When it was put into effect on January 1, 1863, slavery was ended.
