No it is not mayor surgery, however it is responsible for the deaths of more then 100 infants just in the USA every year.
It became better =) Pain, Infection and Blood Loss were all improved on. (In that order) During the 1850s to roughly 1870 there was a high increase in deaths after operations because the use of anaesthetics led to surgeons attempting more risky procedures. However, because infection and blood loss had not been improved, this led to more deaths. Operations used to be done extremely quickly (a lot were done within 30 seconds) with a maximum of 20-30 minutes because otherwise the patient would lose to much blood. The development of catgut by Joseph Lister meant that wounds could be tied without the problem of infection. Overall, the reason that surgery improved was because Pain, Infection and Blood Loss all developed greatly.
Decreased 18%
Joseph Lister (1826-1912) developed a carbolic spray in 1869 to use in operating theatres, thus reducing the number of deaths from infection after successful operations.
Far less than the number of people killed by doctors, heart attacks or drunk drivers.
There are about 100 other things or situations that will kill you at a greater rate. Doctors and drunk drivers are two of them.
Currently, there is no compiled statistic that reports the total number of cosmetic surgery deaths that have ever occurred. However, in general, the chance of dying from cosmetic surgery is roughly 6.25%.
The black period of surgery took place in the 19th century. The black period of surgery happened because of the introduction of anesthetics. This caused the death rate to go up because surgeons could take their time when performing surgery which resulted in more complicated operations. This led to many deaths from infection.
Semmelwies was a doctor in the mid 1850's. He realized through observation that medical students were going straight from surgery to delivering a child, these mothers quite often died due to childbed fever, which he was sure was spread from the corpses to them by the doctors. He introduced a new rule in his hospital, that all doctors had to wash their hands with chlorine. The number of deaths dropped rapidly, he presented his ideas to other doctors and very slowly his idea was accepted, which is why, everybody must wash their hands with ethanol before entering a hospital and doctors tuck in their ties so that no disease cvan be carried on that, and women tie their hair back.....
