Of course, it depends on which time period you are asking about. If you are referring to the distant past, it is worth noting that Maine was part of Massachusetts till 1820 when it gained statehood; but in those formative years, Maine was a very rural area, and it endured a series of conflicts with England, as well as skirmishes with native populations. Life was more difficult back then: we may assume that like most newly established territories, the population spent much of its time working to make the territory safe and prosperous. Activities such as hunting, fishing, building new houses (the lumber industry became very important), ship-building, and farming were part of life.

But people did find ways to entertain themselves and have fun, even if there wasn't always much time for it. People who were literate could get books and magazines to read; there were also newspapers, and while that may not sound like "fun," the adult population did like to be informed. Portland was publishing a newspaper as far back as the 1790s, and when Maine became a state, the media industries became more well-developed in a number of other cities and towns. In the colonial era, entertainment probably took place at public gatherings that involved playing music and singing; and people met at church or at civic functions. We also know some sports were played, although there were no professional teams yet. By the mid-1800s, the telegraph helped information to spread throughout the state much more quickly; and by the late 1890s, there were phonograph records, and then along came silent movies. People also enjoyed going to plays and hearing famous singers or musicians perform.
