Martin Luther did not "split" from the Catholic Church, he left the Catholic Church and started his own. That is technically known as apostasy and heresy. The Orthodox Churches split from the Catholic Church, Martin Luther apostatized from the Catholic Church - two completely different things.

He did this because he disagreed with the Indulgences that the Catholic Church set up. They wanted people to pay money to have their sins forgiven and their deceased family saved from Purgatory (the Catholic faith teaches that for every sin someone commits, they spend seven years in Purgatory before going to Heaven or Hell). People had to pay to use Indulgences, which was unfair because a lot of people involved in the Church were incredibly wealthy. The money was used to build St. Peter's Basilica and the Sistine Chapel. Martin Luther believed that the Indulgences made God angry because it meant that sinning was okay. He also believed that people should have a connection with God at a personal level and not through the Church. The Catholic Church believed that one could not understand the word unless explained by a Priest. Luther translated the New Testament from Latin to German so people could make their own mind up about what it says.

The Catholic (universal) Church was divided long before Luther into the Roman and Eastern Catholic Churches - a power struggle between Rome and the rest of the Catholic community was the original split. From Wikipedia on Matin Luther: 'Luther's theology challenged the authority of the papacy by holding that The Bible is the only infallible source of religious authority[7] and that all baptized Christians under Jesus are a universal priesthood.[8] According to Luther, salvation is a free gift of God, received only by true repentance and faith in Jesus as the Messiah, a faith given by God and unmediated by the church.' Luther was a Church reformer and is considered the father of protetantism, which relies on the Bible as the Christian Authority.

There are many reasons that caused Martin Luther to split with the Catholic church. He did not agree with their indulgences like forcing people to pay money so that they can be forgiven of their sins among other things.

Not really, but the Catholic Church did, indeed, change a lot of its outward structures (education, missionary work, catechesis, etc.) in response to the protestant revolt that Martin Luther led.

Yes. In the Invocavit Sermons, Martin Luther preached about core Christian values such as love, charity, patience, and using God's Word instead of violence to settle conflict.

What did Martin Luther's followers call themselves?

Martin Luther was the leader of the Christian Reformation, that is he started the rebellion against the Roman Catholic church because of what the chatholic church was doing to the people, selling pentances and so forth making them think that the more money they gave for forgiviness of a sin that God would surley forgive them of that sin and they would go to heaven and it would keep them out of hell. The people at that time started calling them selves Lutherans that followed new beliefs of Martin Luther and Martin Luther did not want that but he could not change the people so that is where the Lutheran got their name and where the church got started. Martin Luther aso and formost found in the study of the word that God saves you through his word and that all you have to do is ask God to save you and come into your heart to go to Heaven. This is the biggest difference between the Catholic and the Prodestants today and that is what the Reformation is all about. That is where the name Prodestant came from the word Protest. Martin Luther protested against the Catholic church when he placed his Theses on the door at Worms.

What are the main objectives Luther had to Catholic practice What kinds of change does Luther seek in the clergy and why?

Martin Luther published his problems with Catholic practice in the 95 Theses, which I have attached at the first link below. The 95 Theses are all over the place, and I am absolutely amazed that any thinking, educated person would put any weight to them at all. They are a very mixed bag, some of them calling for things which were already Catholic teaching, others just don't make any sense at all. The only conclusion that one can draw from the 95 Theses is that if Martin Luther really had a doctorate in Theology, it was the most worthless degree ever issued. The only change that Luther sought in the clergy, as known by the Catholic Church, was an end to it. Luther came up with a whole new concept of protestant minister that had nothing whatsoever to do with the holy Catholic priesthood. Why? Because Martin Luther was obviously led astray, certainly he had no knowledge of what is involved in Christ's priesthood, and for such a mind, had no understanding about what Christ's priesthood really entailed.

Why did Luther have a conflict with the Roman Catholic Church?

It's just Catholic, not Roman Catholic. Roman is an epithet first commonly used in England after the protestant revolt to describe the Catholic Church. It is never used by the official Catholic Church."Because the roman catholic church was taking the tithe money and using it for themselves!" This was the original answer posted by someone else, however, it is highly inaccurate and doesn't give the full picture. Martin Luther disagreed with many things. 1: The authority of the Church. Martin Luther did NOT believe in the Pope as the authority of the Church. After the resurrection, Jesus gave the keys of his Church to Peter to be the "physical" leader in His stead. After Peter died, a new leader was chosen and since then, Catholics have always had a Pope. 2: "By Faith alone we are saved" Martin Luther believed that if one just has faith, then he/she is saved and claimed that it was even written in the Bible. When Martin Luther translated the Bible from original Greek to German he added words. Such as, Romans 3:28, "Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith {"allein" (English 'alone')} apart from the deeds of the law." Allein, was added in by Martin Luther and even some Protestant scholars have admitted that this is true, though some denied it. Catholics strongly disagree with the "Faith alone" statement and insist that one must also try to be perfect AND faithful. --This also ties in with Martin Luther's disagreement with confession and repentance. He states, "Be a sinner, and sin boldly, but believe more boldly still. Sin shall not drag us away from Him, even should we commit fornication or murder thousands and thousands of times a day (Luther, M. Letter of August 1, 1521 as quoted in Stoddard, p.93)." Yet Catholics firmly believe in the repentance of one's sins. There are many other things that Martin Luther disagreed with the Catholic faith. As to the answer left beforehand, many people have the misconception that the Catholics were "money hogs." In actuality, the Church was quite poor and what little money it did have, was spent on the long and painstaking process of translating and hand-printing the Bible and distributing them among Churches around Europe, during the middle ages. That point of time with the Church does not tie in with Martin Luther..Answer from a Catholic who used to be a LutheranI'm sorry, but people have to stop dancing around the main issue here. If you actually read Martin Luther's own writings, the man had a problem with alcohol and sex. The man threw off his lifelong religious vows of chastity, obedience, and poverty without so much as a by-your-leave and proceeded to trash the Church for anything he could think of to get the attention off himself as he broke every commandment Our Blessed Lord left us. Martin Luther did not want to try to be good and follow God, so he made up his own religion that allowed him to "sin and sin greatly" and God would still save him, in spite of his sin (his words, not mine). Martin Luther disagreed with the Church because the Church had constantly taught the morality of Jesus calling people to "repent and believe in the Gospel." Luther did NOT want to repent, nor did he want to believe in the Gospel, he wanted to believe that he was saved - period. So the Catholic faith that Our Blessed Lord entrusted to St. Peter and his successors had to go. The German princes loved it as they no longer had to send tithes to Rome, so they followed Luther into the gutter, and took the Church away from the common people.

Who created the Lutheran church?

His followers. I have been raised Lutheran and I have learned that Martin Luther's original intentions were not at all to break with the Catholic church, he in fact encouraged his followers not to break from the church, he just wanted to change the corruptness of it and focus more on the Bible. The way I understand it to be is that Martin Luther's followers (not Martin Luther, it was after his death) broke from the Catholic church because they recognized the strength of the church itself and were insulted by the fact that the Catholic church excommunicated Luther.

What is the relationship between Martin Luther and the Protestants?

Martin Luther created the Protestant Reformation to change the ways of the Holy Roman Catholic Church. Henry the VIII, who was a Catholic at the time, fell in love with a Protestant woman name Anne Boleyn. The Catholic Church did not grant Henry VIII his divorce with Catherine of Aragon, leading Anne Boleyn to convince her love that a new religious order will allow their marriage to be legit. Thus, Henry VIII created the Anglican Church, having the same aim as Luther: the Church needed to be reformed.

Why did Martin Luther and his supporters want to change the Catholic church?

Basically because the Church was asking them to change their lives to conform to Christ's high moral standards. Martin Luther did not wish to do this, and when the Church wouldn't change, he left and founded his own "church". His "supporters" who were mostly the princes what is now northern Germany liked the idea of not sending tax revenue to Rome, so they got on board with a Church tailored to their individual wants.
