Nothing. The gold rush appeared just some months after Mexico lost California to the United States after the Mexican-American War (1846-1848)
It allowed the acquisition of California. Without California, no gold-rush could have happened.
If you are talking about the American gold rush (the 49'ers), I believe they would have taken the Santa Fe trail across New Mexico to the West.
It made Mexico and California both more Booming with population.
Both took land away from Mexico.

Before the gold rush it was a Mexican holding and Mexico did everything they could to keep Anglos out. The main population centers were along the coast and around the missions. Inland it was mainly Native American tribes. As far as an exact number of the population before the gold rush that is unknown.
