The Mongols basically centralized the government, by having the princes pay tributes to the Mongol khan of the Golden Horde, Batu Khan. Also, Moscow flourished as a seat of the Russian Orthodox Church, and as an entity that conquered neighbouring areas and collected tribute for the Mongols.
The Mongols controlled Russia for a period of approximately one-hundred and fifty years by means of vassalship. Russian lords, with their cities and principalities, promised loyalty to the Horde at the appropriate time - for much of its time, this was known as the Golden Horde. Lords not only swore fealty but also paid dues to the Mongols yearly as tribute for their protection. Thus, the Mongols only indirectly controlled Russia but were nonetheless in charge.
