Montesquie suggested that government should have checks and balances. He thought it was especially important that government concentrated seperatley on each branch- executive, judicial, and legistlative. Today, we have the idea of checks and balances thanks to the Enlightenment thinker, Montesquie.

He is famous for his articulation of the theory of separation of powers, taken for granted in modern discussions of government and implemented in many constitutions throughout the world. He was largely responsible for the popularization of the terms feudalism and Byzantine Empire.
Hamilton based the Constitution on nothin because he didnt write it. James Maddison worte it and he based it on what Montesquie said about the separation of powers to keep the gov. in control.He did write part of it, because he was there at the Convention. He based a lot of his ideas on government from the English system of government, which he considered to be one of the best.
Seperation of powers doesn't allow one branch to have too much power.
