he went out and spread the word and was therefore looked upon as a prophet

How was Muhammad called by Allah? Is that what you're asking? Muhammad was called upon by Allah (God) through an Angel named Jibril (you may know him as Angel Gabriel). Jibirl dictated the Qur'an to the prophet, and he then ran back to his wife (Khadijah) in fear (he thought he was going mad. He was also very modest, thinking 'why had God picked me of all people?'). This is known as the Revelation of the Qur'an, but it continues for over 20 years if I remember correctly, and the Qur'an wasn't actually written down until after Muhammad's death (Muhammad was somewhat illiterate). After the revelation, he continued to preach in Makkah until both his uncle and wife died, and so fled to Yathrib (also known as Medina) with his family and the 200 something Muslim converts to escape persecution by the people of Makkah.
I won't suffocate you with anymore details, this isn't one of my religious studies essays, but it's pretty much the whole Revelation of the Qur'an. However, his teachings and preaching's of Islam are also important, as they are pretty much the reason why Islam managed to spread. After all, he did coin Islam like Jesus had with Christianity years previously. Without him, Islam would never have existed, and the Holy Land would still have been controlled by nomadic Pagan tribes.
