Nathaniel Greene started the American Revolution as a low ranking officer, but was promoted and eventually became one of George Washington's most reliable officers. He was in charge of defending Fort Washington from General Lee, but did not lose Washington's trust when the fort fell in 1776. He became Quartermaster General, but resigned from this post soon after when it became apparent that he was not able to agree with Congress over matters like supplying the troops.
