While the US Army & Marine Corps were fighting in South Vietnam (RVN) the US Air Force and air units of the US Navy were fighting an air war in the skies over North Vietnam. The "Air War" was Operation Rolling Thunder, which lasted from 1965 thru November 1968. North Viet MiGs vs US jets; North Viet ground defense systems (SAMs and AAA) vs US jets. The vast majority of US POWs were jet pilots.
