Food during the Elizabethan Era varied considerably; however, royalty often ate poultry, fish and fresh foods and vegetables. Supposedly, Elizabeth rarely ate breakfast - which was common during this time. When breakfast was eaten, it mainly consisted of eggs and pancakes. Peacock and hares seemed to be a primary staple in Elizabeth's diet, which were often served as part of elaborate feasts. Breads were also important, with wheat loafs being eaten by the upper classes.
I saw a Food channel program on the menu of the Queen. Her chef was interviewed. Every day a menu is printed in French and she has many different gourmet dishes from breads to meats. There are several courses for dinner and many of the dinners she has are state affairs where there is a long table of people invited to dinner. She sits in the middle of the table and there is a whole staff to set the table perfectly ( they use white gloves to set the dishes and silverware as well as measure the distance between items). She inspects the table before every event.
Bread & Wine
The poorest people would eat 'pottage', a type of rather bland stew made with vegetables & wild plants/herbs.Beer would be drunk as water was genrally unsafe. There would be different strengths of beer. The weakest was called 'small beer' & was made from barley etc that had alreadt been brewed up once or twice so it would be very weak.Even children would drink this 'small beer'.
The richest people lived on large amounts of protein,so lots of meat & very little vegetables etc. They also consumed lots of wine.
