We do not know what St. Nicholas believed about many issues. We do know he was a very pious and holy Catholic bishop who firmly believed in the truths as reveal by Jesus. He even went so far as to punch an heretical bishop, Arius, in the nose because he denied that Jesus was indeed divine. We also know by his actions that he believed in charity towards others, especially the poor and needy, but he also felt it important that the charity be done in such a manner as to not draw attention to one's self. It should be carried out so that only God knows who is doing the good. Nicholas tried to keep most of his charitable works secret but was 'caught in the act' a few times.
So, though we are unable to really get into the mind of St. Nicholas, we can learn much about his manner of thinking by learning about his life and charitable work.
