He was acclaimed a saint by the early Christian community in Ireland; as the current system of canonization had not yet been developed. While there had been previous Christian missionaries such as St Declan, he is credited with widespread conversions, introduction of literacy, and in convincing local rulers to abolish slavery.

AnswerIn the early part of the fifth century C.E., the Roman Catholic Church sent Patrick as a missionary bishop to Ireland. His main objective was to convert the Irish to Christianity, and during his years of preaching and working among the people, Patrick is credited with having laid the foundation for the Catholic Church there.

Over the years many legends have developed about his exploits. One of the most famous is that while on that mountain, Patrick banished all the snakes from Ireland.

Tradition has it that he built a small church on the summit. Although that building is long since gone, the original foundation still exists, and the site as well as the mountain has been a place of pilgrimage through the years. Of the Catholic Saint Patrick, Dr. Joseph F. Kelly of John Carrol University says: All the stories about Patrick may not be historically true, but that does not mean they have no value.

AnswerThere is actually not a lot of proof that St. Patrick as such existed as a real living person. Like many Christian saints he is probably an composite character made up of various pagan beliefs of the time and perhaps one or two christian missionaries who were martyred trying to convert the Celts. The snakes he is said to have driven out of Ireland were actually druids for whom the serpent was a symbol of life and eternity but was for Christians a symbol of evil and original sin. AnswerBecause of Patrick's conversion of Ireland to Christianity, the culture and written word were rerserved through the Dark Ages. This is explained more fully in a book called ''How the Irish Saved Civilization'', a link to which can be found in the Related Links section on the right.

Basically, he brought Christianity to Ireland. So he was rewarded. Can some one please tell me WHEN he was made a saint!

There was no canonization process in place when Patrick died, that came about in the 12th century. He would have been declared a saint by popular acclamation and his sainthood approved by a local bishop soon after he died in 467. Today only the pope can declare a saint and only after a lengthy canonization process.
