After graduating from Harvard, Samuel Adams first public office was tax collector. In 1765, he was elected to the Massachusetts Assembly; he became a delegate to the First Continental Congress in 1744 and was a signator of the Declaration of Independence in 1776. Adams became a member of the Massachusetts State constitutional convention in 1780 and was appointed Lieutenant Governor of Massachusetts in 1789 and elected governor of the State and served from 1794 to 1797.
