We read that she laughed inwardly when she overheard that she would be a mother in her old age, since was past child bearing age. In fact they name their son whom she later bore Isaac, which means "He laughs/will laugh".

She also gave her Egyptian handmaiden Hagar to Abraham to lie with, as was the custom of the day, so that the child born to Hagar would become the child that God had promised to them.
