The Ghost of Christmas Past reminded Scrooge of the love and sorrow he experienced. He learned that he was a lonely child, he had lost many that he'd loved, especially Fan, his sister, and Belle, his betrohed, but he saw the good in people through Fezziwig.
Scrooge learned from the Ghost of Christmas Past that his transformation into a bitter and miserly man was influenced by his negative experiences in the past, and that he had the power to change his ways by reflecting on those memories and embracing the spirit of compassion and generosity.
He sees some of why he has hardened toward others, like the death of his beloved sister and the breaking of his engagement to Belle. It sets out for both Scrooge and the reader the reasons for his attitude and stony heart.
That unless he (Scrooge) changes his miserly ways then he was destined to walk the earth in everlasting torment
