This was a punitive campaign of burning and looting, following a rich harvest that allowed Sherman and his army to live off the land and ignore their long and vulnerable supply-line.

It was characterised by extreme and deliberate destructiveness, rather than brutality, and Sherman imposed strict punishments for offences against the person. But his army was followed by hundreds of mounted vandals ('Bummers'), along for the ride, who caused much additional misery to the wretched locals.

By the time he reached Savannah and the sea, he had made his point, and was keen to repeat the performance in South Carolina, the state that had started all the trouble.
