Before the arrival of white traders the many tribes of the Dakotas, Nakotas and Lakotas made most of their clothing from soft-tanned antelope, deer or elk skins (collectively known as "buckskin").
Moccasin soles had to be tough and hard-wearing, so these came from buffalo skins (often old tipi covers cut up for the purpose). But buffalo hide is generally too stiff and thick to make clothing, apart from warm winter "robes" - entire buffalo hides with the fur worn next to the body.
When trade blankets became available these were used instead of buffalo robes; traders also brought ready-made clothing such as shirts, hats and dresses. Trade cloth was also used for men's breechclouts and leggings.
