Actually, although the duke was indeed 83 at the time of his death, the cause was not, in fact, 'old age' as the previous answer states, but rather a severe Stroke. The Duke had suffered several Strokes in the year or two prior to his death, including one whilst driving home to Apsley House, and another while sitting in the House of Lords. Both are well documented. These strokes eventually culminated in a series of epileptic seizures on the day of his death.
