Ulysses S. Grant was one of the best generals in the civil war. His actual name was Hiram Ulysses Grant. Ulysses is his middle name, not his first name. The "S." doesn't stand for anything, he actually admitted that the "S." didn't stand for anything. The army had mis-recorded his name as Ulysses Simpson Grant. Having won the civil war for the north by beating the confederate army under Robert E Lee he was voted US President for two terms.

As commander of the Federal armies in the West he succesfully besieged and captured Vicksburg. As General-in-Chief of all the Union armies he the actions of the Federal armies so that they all attacked similtaneously, making it impossible for the Confederate armies to defend on all fronts. Instead of making his headquarters in Washington, D.C. he commanded in the field, making his headquarters with the Army of the Potomac which was commanded by General Meade. Thus he directly commanded the campaigns which ultimately forced General Lee to surrender the Army of Northern Virginia at Appomatox Court House.
