That blew them back. Aeolus was the keeper of the winds and he bottled up a bag of winds for Odysseus so he could reach Ithaca, his home, faster. Ulysses asked Aeolus to get him and his men home quickly and safely.

Odysseus' crew did. They believed Odysseus was hiding treasure from the rest of the crew.

The king of the winds (aeolous) gives Odysseus a bag of winds that has all of the winds except for one (the west wind?) that will bring him home and he does get home within sight of Ithaca but then his crewmates got suspicious of the bag opened it and were blown back away from Ithaca back toward the island of the winds
Odysseus ends up back at Aeoli, the island of Aeolus, keeper of the winds and son of Hippotas.
They open the bag of wind, because they have no idea whats in it. The shipmates think it contains gold, silver, food, etc. Once the bag is opened, instead of bringing them home like it was supposed to, the winds send the ship away from Ithaca.
He didn't tell them what was inside the bag that Aeolus gave him. Odysseus was given a bag full of winds and was told to not open it right away. When he does open it however, the winds will take him straight to Ithaca. He didn't tell his men this. he only told them not to open it. Curiosity killed them and they just had to open it. When they opened it, the winds caused a windstorm and made them go in the wrong direction.
Aeolus gave Odysseus the bag of winds as a gift to help him reach Ithaca safely. However, Odysseus' curious crew opened the bag, thinking it contained treasure, which released the winds and blew them off course. Aeolus released the west wind this time as punishment for their failure to reach their destination.
