President Warren Harding got married on July 8, 1891. He married Florence Kling, who was five years older than him. In many points during their marriage, it was less than par. From the Warren G. Harding Ohio Historical Website: In 1916, Senator Warren Harding spoke at the Republican national convention. It was June and the Republican's were looking for something to improve their chances of winning the White House. Harding brought the convention to its feet with his stirring speech. One of the phrases Harding used in his speech, are engraved on the pedestal of a sundial in the backyard of Harding's home in Marion. That phrase reads: "We must have a citizenship less concerned about what the government can do for it... and more concerned about what it can do for the nation." Warren G. Harding Does that phrase sound familiar? It should. President Kennedy in January 1961 used the same thought when he said: "And so, my fellow Americans: ask not what your country can do for you - ask what you can do for your country." John F. Kennedy
In 1924 Coolidge, who had replaced Harding, was elected to a term of his own. He more or less continued the Harding administration- isolationist foreign policy and miniimal government interference with business. Continuaton of prohibition.
My favorite Harding quote is ,"We must have a citizenship less concerned about what the government can do for it and more anxious about what it can do for the nation." Harding believed in a federal government that provided the basic services listed in the Constitution but little else. He also believed in staying out of foreign affairs as much as possible.
The election of Warren G. Harding implied a return to a more isolationist foreign policy for America. Harding campaigned on a platform of "America first" and promised a return to normalcy after World War I. His presidency prioritized domestic issues and focused on rebuilding the economy, with less emphasis on international involvement.
He did not live to finish out his first term. He only served from early 1921 to August 1923, when he died suddenly. His vice president, Calvin Coolidge, took over and finished out Harding's term.
