In 1677, William Penn led about 200 settlers to a town named Burlington. There, he named the area that was bought by him and others, "New Wales", then "Sylvania" (Latin for "forests or woods'"), which King Charles changed to "Pennsylvania" in honor of Penn's father, Admiral Sir William Penn.
