Sherman stayed in the Army. When Grant was elected president, Sherman took over as Commanding General of the US Army, and held this position from 1869-1883, when he retired. There was much Indian warfare in the west during this time, but Sherman took no active part, remaining at his headquarters in Washington. Custer's men were massacred during his time as CG.

Sherman died in 1891. His funeral was on a rainy day, and his old enemy, former Confederate General Joseph E. Johnston was in attendance. Johnston refused to put his hat on his head out of respect for Sherman, though it was a cold and rainy day. Johnston caught pneumonia and died a month later.
