Both sides learned that this war was not going to be won by each side overnight. This "civil war" was destined to last a number of years. Both sides also got to see the ferocity of full scale warfare for their own eyes. Citizens and dignitaries from Washington made the short trip out there to watch the "crushing of the rebels". This, as history tells us, was not to be. In fact the Union was the side that was crushed and forced into a full scale retreat back to Washington.
