Clark Gable
Clark Gable, then known as Billy, moved to Oregon to work as a logger in Bend and then lived in Portland and Astoria as a young man between 1920 and 1923. While in Portland, he lived in a rooming house off of Burnside and SW 13th avenue and worked at The Oregonian in the advertising department and later at Meier and Frank selling ties. In Astoria he acted at a little theater coompany (where there is a plaque commemorating his stay in the downtown) and later in Portland with the Red Lantern Players where he met the acting teacher Josephine Dillon 12-17 years his senior, whom he later married. Dillon groomed Gable, getting his teeth fixed and dressing him in elegant clothes, while working on his acting technique. They moved to Hollywood where he eventually would get his big break. For many years after becoming a big star, Gable visited Portland where he had made some very good friends.
