111140 (Wheat Farming)
Modern machinery significantly transformed wheat farming on the southern plains by increasing efficiency and productivity. Tractors, seed drills, and combine harvesters allowed farmers to plant and harvest crops more quickly and with less labor compared to traditional methods. This mechanization enabled larger areas to be cultivated, improved soil management, and facilitated the adoption of advanced agricultural techniques. As a result, farmers could produce higher yields and respond better to market demands.
Wheat is not a naturally occurring crop. It is the result of generations of cultivating and breeding by farmers starting with a wild grass and choosing the best seeds each cycle. Hunter gatherers could exist in the same areas as farmers and could snack on the farmer's wheat crops. However before farmers, no wheat. So when everybody was a hunter gatherer nobody had wheat.
The history of wheat farming is so ancient that it cannot be attributed to just one person. Cave men as early as 6700 B. C would cultivate wheat to convert into flour. This was much before any interest in record keeping.
Dry farming is also called dryland farming. It is a type of farming where the crops are cultivated without irrigation in arid areas. Farmers typically grow winter wheat, which is a drought-resistant crop.
The creation of the wheat belt in the Great Plains was driven by innovations in agriculture, such as the introduction of mechanized farming equipment and the development of drought-resistant wheat varieties, which allowed farmers to cultivate the land more efficiently. However, the 1890s brought troubled times for wheat farmers due to a combination of factors, including severe drought conditions, falling wheat prices caused by overproduction, and increased competition from foreign wheat markets. Additionally, economic instability and high debts made it difficult for many farmers to sustain their operations, leading to widespread financial distress.
