Their heads were shaved, belongings taken, men and women were separated, women were killed in gas chambers, men were put to work. If the men were to old or too young to do anything, they were killed by being burned alive or put into acidic chemical pits to die.

The Concentration Camps in Germany and Poland, as well as in France and the Baltic/Slavic states were cruel and dehumanizing.

Certain prisoners in the camps were designated for what the Nazis called 'special treatment' which was an amelioration for cruel and inhumane punishment.

The 'special treatment' depended to some degree on the particular camp, or Lager.
In most, there were cruel beatings, starvation, deliberate administrations of diseases such as typhoid, and humiliations so intense that they broke the spirit as well as the body.

Medical experiments were notable in camps such as Auschwitz-Birkenau and Nazweiler among others, and included subjecting prisoners to severe hypothermia (immersion in ice water) for long periods of time, cruel and bizarre surgeries, twin studies, injections of infectious material, sterilizations, etc in addition to standard cruelties of shaving heads, pulling teeth with gold fillings, taking away eyeglasses from visually impaired, maimings for minor offenses, and forcible rape.

Mothers had to watch children harmed and taken away, infants born were drowned and killed, and deaths within the camps included gassings, shootings, starvation, inflicted disease without real treatment, and even crucifixions and other cruel deaths.
Those trying to escape were shot to death, were subject to dog attacks, and if they made it to the perimeter, they were met by electrocution on barbed wire fences.

The degree of cruelty was unspeakable and the descriptions above only a rough summary. Certain camps were manned by Nazi guards trained at Trawniki, in which techniques of extreme cruelty were taught.

When moral bounds are removed to obtain a national or ideological goal, we have learned in the Shoah, that there are no limits to what human beings are capable of doing to one another.
