In the American west it would have been hats to keep the sun off their heads. Bandanas around the neck to guard against dust storms. Chaps to protect the legs from stickers and brush. Their saddles would not have been fancy. Plain working saddles were the best choice. Boots and spurs are a given. The horses would be dressed the same. Working tack was practicle and durable.
