While traveling, Dunant witnessed the destructive aftermath of the Battle of Solferino, and detailed what he saw and his feelings about them in a book. Dunant's thoughts inspired the creation of the International Committee of the Red Cross, and the same thoughts also influenced the ideas of the Geneva Convention. In 1901, he received the first Nobel Peace Prize.
