John Hancock was a prosperous Boston businessman who wanted American independence from Great Britain. He became a Massachusetts representative to the Continental Congress, and was elected president of the Continental Congress in 1775. As president, Hancock was the first to sign the Declaration of Independence in July of 1776.

He was elected as one of Boston's five Selectman, but he changed his mind after a few months, and joined the resistance to the Stamp Act by participating in a boycott of Britsh goods. When his father died he went to go live with his uncle (Thomas Hancock) and his aunt (Lydia Hawke Thaxter), and his uncle owned huge business (and he was the wealthiest man in the 13 colonies) on goods through out the colonies.
