Besides the war and the draft, the American counterculture or the 1960s condemned racial discrimination and "The Man" (the power of government and those who supported it) and traditional 'uptight' American values. One of the mantras of the 60s counterculture that survives today, and I still live by is, "question everything".

The Emergence of the Counterculture A counterculture developed in the United States in the late 1960s, lasting from approximately 1964 to 1972, and coinciding with Americaโs involvement in Vietnam. It was characterized by the rejection of conventional social normsโin this case, the norms of the 1950s. The counterculture youth rejected the cultural standards of their parents, specifically regarding racial segregation and initial widespread support for the Vietnam War.
