Medieval monks provided a number of supports to their communities.
They ran most, but not all, of the schools. They also tutored important people separately.
They gave aid to the poor.
They ran military monastic organizations that provided protection to travellers and places for them to stay. Two groups in particular are noted for this, The Knights Templar, and the Knights Hospitaller.
The Knights Templar operated an early financial system for transferring money from one place to another.
Monastic organization ran monasteries, where people could go to retreat from society and be safe. They sheltered people ranging from queens fleeing from their husbands to women serfs fleeing from their families. They sometimes harbored admitted criminals, as long as they believed it was an act that might save a soul. Their properties were sacrosanct, and kings did not usually dare to violate them.
They transcribed bibles and other books.
After the fall of the Roman Empire, most accumulated knowledge in the West was at terrible risk of being lost forever. The monks played a huge part in ensuring that didn't happen. They labored for years making copies of important books and papers.
There are many different orders or types of Monks. Those who cloister themselves off from the world believe in study and prayer. That is to say they believe contemplation and prayer can bring the grace of God to the community in an intercessary manner. You have probably heard of Monks who never or rarely speak. That is because they desire to keep their minds on spiritual issues in the hopes God will bless the world with His presence and power. The notion of removing ones self from the polutions of the world is in view here. The Bible is very big on prayer and praying for others. There is NO MENTION of removing ones self from the world. Quite the contrary. The Bible reminds followers of Christ to get out and into the world with the message of salvation in Christ. Believers are encouraged to be a blessing personally as well as seeking blessings. See the last chapter of the Gospel of Matthew. We ought never be too quick to judge the merits of a cloister. I just do not see it in Scripture.
In a Buddhist community there are lay people and monks/nuns. Lay people, like you amd me do daily work to earn a living and to look after our families. Lay people have the freedom to think and act how they like and if they are Buddhist they are required to undertake the 5 precepts. Precepts are not really commandments; they refrain from 'Killing', Stealing, Sexual Misconduct, Lying and Intoxication of the Mind. They refrain with the best of their ability as they strongly believe in the 'natural' Law of Karma; Today is the result of Yesterday and Today is also the cause of Tomorrow. Unlike lay people, monks live for the betterment of the Mind while most lay people live for the betterment of the body. As such monks spent most of their time in mind cultivation; to look inward to realise the true nature of things. To assist them in their mind training they have to observe hundred of precepts; in a way to restrict body movement and concentrate on the nature of the mind energy. In a Buddhist community the lay people will take care of their daily needs as well as the daily needs (like food) for the monks, while the monks will take care of their mind and the spiritual needs of the lay people.

Roman Catholic AnswerMonks and Nuns primarily give glory to God. That is what they are doing for the community, they are offering prayer and intercession. For instance, St. Therese of Lisieux died when she was only 24, and had never left her convent since she entered nine years earlier. Yet, today she is considered a great missionary. She spent her life praying for the missions, and for the priests that were serving there. She is now the patron saint of Alaska. Monks and nuns normally do not leave their monasteries, so that do not DOanything in the normal sense of the word. But, as God is all-powerful, and they are praying to Him, they can accomplish a lot more than people who are out doing things.Monks were primarily involved with copying manuscripts, since printing did not exist in Europe yet. They gave a monopoly to the Church on written matters, as they were essentially the only source of written materials at that time. They also ran schools throughout Europe, basically keeping civilization alive.
Nuns provided other services, such as employing wings in their convents as hospitals, inns and bakeries where they themselves acted as nurses, innkeepers and bakers.
Monks and nuns looked after the poor and sick and set up schools for children. They gave cheesecake and lodging to travelers, and some monks and nuns became missionaries. Monks and nuns copied Greek and Roman works as a form of labor. Educated monks and nuns also wrote and taught Latin, and educated people.
For the Christians monks, they help through their fervent prayer and their foods supply in their monastery is used for helping the people especially poor.
everything, monks are beast
None. I think they take the easy way out by not having a responsibility to earn their own crust. Everything boils down to just about their own selfish selves. They rather beg and be leeches than to go out into the world to get a job.
Not necessarily. Many religions have monks. Monks are people who withdraw from ordinary life to pursue their religious beliefs on a daily basis. So you can have Christian monks, Buddhist monks, Hindu monks, etc. Islam does not have a similar tradition though.
charitable contributions and their sales of plants and whatnot
contributions of the modern family in the society?
contributions of physics to society and national development
Sure, but they have to leave their positions.
Yes
They are called a cassock.
Monasteries or temples (communities of monks) usually are supported by donations, contributions, and/or begging.
well,Buddhists wear saffron, but they're monks. Christian monks normally wear earthly colors. e.g:dark green, brown
Franciscans
For Christian monks, it depends on the monastic order they've joined. All orders emphasize regular prayer and introspection. Beyond that, some orders are founded to do missionary work, some focus on agriculture, teaching, or other service, some are contemplative orders; that is, they withdraw from the society around them to study and pray. It is my understanding that Buddhist monasteries can be much more flexible in what their members do. All monks must study the dhamma lessons and learn to meditate. This is necessarily a very brief, simplistic answer.
There are so many contributions that Bill Gates is credited for in the society. He has made great contributions in science and technology through his company Microsoft.
