The neo-Babylonian empire existed from about 626 BCE till 539 BCE. This portion of time in Mesopotamian and Babylonian history shows the region was highly developed for its day-- there were courts of law, temples to the various gods and goddesses, a thriving city life in Babylon, and a hierarchical system of labor. There was a form of feudalism in which the poor (who worked in farming and agriculture) were considered part of the land on which they worked; their labor was owned by the wealthy members of society who also owned the land.
But there is evidence that skilled craftsmen, who were considered of a higher status than farm laborers, were able to use barter, and they received goods as payment for their work-- for one example, land was something frequently traded and used as payment. In addition to land, food or clothing might also have been used as payment for service. There is some evidence that coins were invented around this time, but it is not clear whether a system of payment using money was occurring with any regularity during the Neo-Babylonian era.
