Newton concluded that the combination of the gravitational force between the Earth and the Sun, and the Earth's inertia moving it in a straight line, keep the Earth in orbit around the Sun.
He did not. The concept of gravity existed before Newton; everyone who has ever lived has known that things fall. Newton was simply the first person to accurately describe gravity and how it works both on Earth and in space.

The story of the apple has been greatly exaggerated over the years. Newton used an apple as an example when explaining that Earth's gravity pulls the apple down and that same gravity acts on the moon to keep it in orbit around the earth. I don't believe there was an apple that actually fell on Newton.

Gravity is what keeps objects anchored to the earth.
Weight = mass x gravity. On Earth, gravity is approximately 9.8 meters/second2, which is the same as 9.8 newton/kilogram. That is, every kilogram has a weight of approximately 9.8 newton.
