Even as youngsters, Pawnee boys were strictly supervised by their parents and only permitted to play with other boys of the same "rank" as themselves. From about the age of 12 boys tended the horse herd, taking them to pasture or to water and standing guard; this gave them good experience in guard duty which they put into practice from about 15 or 19 years of age, when they acted as scouts for war parties or stood lookout around the village.
Girls had no such responsibilities, simply playing together and learning from their mothers or aunts.
